New Fave: A Case for Pearl Jewelry

Written by Shana

Has anyone else ever hated their birthstone? Years of perusing through my mom’s Avon order books made me hip to personalized pendant necklaces. Girls born in any of the eleven other months had shiny glistening gems to set inside their Sterling Silver Angel Charm on a 16” Box Chainlink while I got hardened oyster spit. June. The Pearl. Blegh. It was a rock among jewels. It was the fact my birthstone wasn’t the same as everyone else that made me hate it. That and at the time, I thought oysters were gross. Thankfully, I had a revelation. Not only in culinary taste but also in embracing my true nature of standing out. And recently, pearls have never been more popular.

A string of pearls has always been considered a styling classic—so much so that even today’s it-girl fashion aesthetics are complemented with their addition. Now, the classic gem is getting a second life with the burgeoning Pearlcore trend, which at all points is luxe, campy, classic, and modern.

One of my recent favorite qualities about pearl jewelry is the fact that because they are naturally made, they are eco-friendly. There is plenty of discourse on if pearls qualify as sustainable jewelry but the truth of the matter is as a shopper, you have to question your retailer. Below are some recent pearl purchases I got from small businesses whose owners are so kind and passionate about their productions. Peep and purchase to add a renewed classic touch to any outfit.

This brand has a collection highlighting freshwater pearls and its pearl pendant piece showcases the ethos of the entire line. It’s a modern spin on the classic which compliments any style of attire.

This youthful take on pearl jewelry is what first got me hooked on the trend. I have several Sanche Store items. Not only are they at an affordable price point, but Alekandra, the owner, is quick to communicate and happily executes custom pieces.

Another great Etsy find this asymmetrical ring is the perfect addition to a date night’s little black dress or can casually adorn your finger during weekday zoom meetings.

These mismatched pairs make a statement either apart or together. The duality of the accessory, and the fact that Only Made is a Black-owned brand operating out of Brooklyn made me an instant fan.
